One of the more consistent themes that you will see throughout my videos and teachings is that understanding the game is your key to success. Ask me how I know this?

Ask yourself the following question. If you were driving down the road, looked up ahead and saw a car about to veer into another lane to cause an accident, would that be better than just looking at the car in front of you and then having to slam on the brakes when that car almost runs into the accident that happen up the road?

Many of you are the person just staring at the car right in front of you. Maybe you have a really quick right foot that can slam on the brakes but is that how you want to live?

You are out on the field with little ability to anticipate what play is coming. You have no idea what route is about to be run or where the quarterback may be thinking of going with the football. How long do you think you can keep slamming on the brakes before you have an accident…. a couple of accidents…. too many accidents?

You know what happens when your car keeps getting hit right? You have to put it and probably your license on the shelf. The shelf is also known as the sidelines.

If you are going to be a playmaker, you have to be able to anticipate. For you to anticipate, you have to have knowledge. You must have knowledge of self and your enemy. The more complete the knowledge the better you can anticipate.

Who do you want to be this season? The anticipator or slam on the brakes guy?

DB News

The Baltimore Ravens have signed Jaire Alexander who was released from the Green Bay Packers last week. The former Pro Bowler has only played in 14 games over the last two seasons. According to reports, Alexander signed for $4 million with the potential to reach $6 million with incentives. Former All Pro Xavien Howard is still an unsigned free agent.

Ohio, California and Florida each have two cornerbacks in the 247 Sports Top 10 cornerbacks for the class of 2026.

DB Tip

 For slot defenders (i.e. nickel backs and safeties).  It is extremely important to know where your help is when you are playing man coverage.  If you are getting help from the middle linebacker and the slot WR has a tight split,  play on his outside shoulder and squeeze him to your MLB help.  Conversely,  if the slot WR has a wide split and is far from your MLB help, then the help is the sidelines.  Align inside of the slot WR who most of the time is running an in breaking route.

Dead at the Start: Correct These 4 Press Man Mistakes

If you do or watch something long enough, you get really good at predicting the future. Needless to say, I’ve been playing, coaching, and training football for quite some time. The majority of that time has been spent on the defensive side of the ball, primarily teaching defensive backs how to cover wide receivers. That experience has allowed me to recognize when a player is in trouble before the ball is even snapped.
