This Drill Will Turn You Into a Hip Magnet in Man Coverage
Hey Defender of the Airways,
To master any athletic movement you are going to need efficiency and nowhere is that more crucial than in playing defensive back.
Your entire existence at the defensive back position involves reaction and if you are going to be really good at it, you are going to need really efficient movement.
The place where this shows up the most is in man coverage. Most defensive backs fall short in their ability to stay with a wide receiver in man coverage because their foot placement and body positioning are out of whack.
In my sessions at All Eyes DB Camp I seek to correct my clients’ movements so that efficiency becomes the norm. One of the best ways to do that is with the 5 Cone Kick Drill that you see down below.
The aim in this drill is to teach efficient movement in a player’s kick slide which is crucial for press man coverage. In addition, it teaches the proper way to exit the line of scrimmage when a receiver goes vertical in his route and emphasizes the correct foot placement when getting out of breaks.
Below is a video of Carolina Panthers DB / LB Isaiah Simmons going through the drill at one of my sessions
You will notice the smoothness of movement by a guy that is 6’4” and 235 lbs. It takes time to develop this but with proper guidance and training this can be achieved by players of all sizes.
