Set the Trap in Press Coverage
Hey Defender of the Airways,
So much of winning as a DB comes from just knowing what to do
If you are going to win in you press man coverage reps with some consistency, you are going to have to learn something about angles. You are also going to have to understand the parts of the field and take advantage of leverage.
Many DBs lose as the route progresses down the field because they fail to set the trap. This means that once the receiver starts taking his release (outside or inside), defensive backs fail to squeeze them to their help (sidelines or teammates) and then do a poor job of setting up the wall.
Perhaps you didn’t know that there is a wall that needs to be set up when you are playing man coverage and more specifically when playing press. Far too often, I see DBs do a lot of good at the line of scrimmage and even on the exit only to lose when they take poor position on the receiver as they run down the field and essentially let them out of the trap.
To get a clearer picture of what I mean, check out this short clip below from one of my training sessions with NFL hopeful Kevin Turner.
