Safeties Need this Skill as the Last Line of Defense

Your DB tip is below, but first...

Being in South Florida, I get to see a ton of talented young football players. The level of athletic excellence is unsurpassed by any other region in the country. Every year, the NFL drafts a ton of players that are either directly from this area or their roots can be traced back to it.

With that said, over my 20+ years in the coaching and training space in South Florida, I have seen some of the more athletically gifted players fail to make it at the college level because they could not or would not embrace the mental side of football.

Sure, the physical side of football is fun. Being able to run by a guy and jump over him can definitely make you feel like you’re on top of the world. Feeling like the strongest man on the field can give you a dominant mindset. However, there is a world of fun in knowing the technique that will neutralize a player’s attack and having the knowledge to anticipate what the offense will do next.

The path to acquiring this superpower is in being able to read, study, and pay attention. Nothing breaks my heart more than to see a player blessed with all of the athletic talent that God can bestow upon one individual only to have him brought to his knees by the playbook or the inability to spot the trick that the offense is pulling on him.

As you approach this offseason, if you are not taking the steps to improve your mental capacity as a defensive back or linebacker, then you run the risk of falling into the category of the players I mentioned.

Now, here’s your DB Tip:

As safeties, one of the most important skills you can have is the ability to cover a lot of ground.  As the last line of defense and with a tremendous amount of space between you and the rest of the defense,  it is important to practice covering a lot of space.  Along with having good speed,  taking the proper angles is the key to covering a lot of ground.  Work on your ability to turn your hips and run at a 45 degree angle using proper body positioning and learning how to use your eyes to reach the target.

I have a list of drills that will help with this skill in the All Eyes DB Camp Member’s Area.
