Your excellence begins with a thirst for knowledge.
There are two types of defensive backs out there: those who are just playing, and others who are playing with a purpose. You can train till your legs fall off in the offseason. That means you can run all the yards, lift all the pounds, and dodge through all the cones, but if you don’t up your knowledge of the game, then you will find yourself being a step too late.
Football is a fast-moving game. The guys who are out there just playing with a limited knowledge of their schemes and the offense’s plot against you won't get the desired results. The true playmaker realizes that they can never know too much. There’s always more to learn about the coverages you are playing and the offenses you are facing. Furthermore, there are always ways to improve technique and anticipation when out on the field.
The question is, will you make time to fill in that knowledge?
If you want to be a true playmaker—I am talking about a guy that has double-digit interceptions, or a coach that has a unit that's leading the league in interceptions—then you will gobble up all the knowledge you can before the ball gets teed up again for the next season. I am here for that quest.

Darion Jones - c/0 2026 CB - 6’1” 170 lbs - Omaha North, NE
Jones is the #10 ranked CB in the 2026 Class according to Rivals and is committed to Iowa. It’s not often that you see a cornerback prospect out of the state of Nebraska rated this high but Jones is worthy of the honor. His versatility as a football players has undoubtedly earned him this high praise. His highlight video features him heavily in the return games and on offense. It’s a display of his athleticism that he would not be able to show if he was strictly a cornerback. On defense he shows solid ball skills, tenacity and toughness. As you would expect, he knows what to do with the football on defense when he gets his hands on it. Jones’ explosiveness really shows up when he tackles. He is listed at 170 lbs. but on film he looks smaller. This matters now when he collides with a ball carrier. Many of Jones’ tackles end up with the him putting the opponent on their back. Is he the purest cornerback in the class? NO but he has a lot to work with and at Iowa, they develop talent. He is one of the more interesting prospects in the class. - Click here for Darion Jones’ Hudl

Coach What is Palms Coverage?
“Palms” is a quarters-side match call where the corner and safety read the No. 2 receiver to decide who takes the flat and who takes vertical. It often looks like Cover 2 to the QB but plays like Quarters after the read.
When to use it:
Versus 2×2 sets with a real slot threat.
On quick-game downs (stick, slant/arrow, spacing) and RPO teams.
To bait throws to the flat and jump them.
