Understanding Zone Coverage

Defend your space effectively

Todayy, the world will be watching as the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59.

For many of the players, this will be the biggest football game of their lives. It may even be the biggest event they ever experience. History will be made one way or another, but will all the players be prepared?

In their last two Super Bowl victories, the Chiefs have won with a play they call “Corn Dog” — a goal-line play where a receiver is sent in jet motion, only to retrace his steps at the snap and run back out into the flat for a touchdown.

In Super Bowl 57, the Chiefs ran it against this same Eagles team. The play had been used several times during the season by the Chiefs, yet the Eagles were seemingly unprepared for it.

In Super Bowl 58, the Chiefs ran it against the 49ers. Of course, this came after running it the year before against the Eagles. Somehow, the 49ers also seemed unprepared for it.

What about you? Your big moment is coming. Will you be an Eagle or a Chief? Perhaps that moment is this upcoming season. It might happen in a rivalry game or your championship game. When it comes, will you be a 49er or a Chief?

Moments provide greatness for those who are prepared. What are you doing to prepare? Have you trained your body AND your mind for victory? Leave nothing to chance. Success is not an accident.

DB News

Patrick Surtain II won the Defensive Player of the Year Award on Thursday. He became the 12th defensive back in league history to achieve this milestone.

I can not tell you how proud I am of him and how happy I am for his family. Having coached Pat in high school and continue to train him now during his professional career, I am not surprised at this achievement.

He is a very detailed oriented individual who strives to have impeccable technique and a total understanding of what is going on around him. This is what success is made of. Congrats to him on his honor.

DB Tip

In zone you cover with your mouth and less with your legs.  Work on your communications skills and make it a point to call out routes in zone coverages to help your other defenders cover their area. This will not only help them but help you.  If your fellow defenders fail to cover their area then that is where the ball will go and you will see little to no action.  Help them cover their area so that you can see action in your zone.
