Elite Cornerbacks Do These Things Well

Your Latest All Eyes DB Camp News

Camp season is upon us, and that means you'll soon find yourself in front of evaluators, trying to make a strong impression in hopes of gaining positive attention.

Whether you are a high school, college, or even professional defensive back, you are going to be evaluated. Having spent my fair share of time as a coach at camps, tasked with making quick evaluations in large groups of athletes, here are some things that stand out to me in these situations:

1 - Willingness to Lead

Defensive backs are alphas. Alphas aren’t afraid to go first in a drill for fear of messing up. They know that’s a possibility and are willing to take it on. Also, I tend to remember the name of the first guy in drills.

2 - Coachability

When you mess up a drill, can you look me in the eye, take the criticism, and improve on the next rep? If you physically aren’t getting it, are you working through it as you wait for your next turn?

3 - Well-Rounded Skill Set

Can you play press coverage on one rep in 1-on-1s and then play off just as well on the next? When we transition to 7-on-7, do you have a solid understanding of basic coverages?

4 - Competitiveness

I watch 1-on-1s for two things: does a guy work his technique, and can he handle getting beat? I don’t get too caught up in the results—you will lose a 1-on-1 rep. Are you going to let it kill your spirit, or will it make you more determined on the next rep?

If you display these characteristics at a camp, you’re almost guaranteed to have me or another defensive back coach write your name or number down to advance to the next stage of the camp or be considered for MVP.

The best part? All of these traits are within your control and can be developed.

DB News

Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner from Colorado who played both offense and defense, is listed as a defensive back for the NFL scouting combine taking place from February 24 to March 3 in Indianapolis. The league released the list of 329 players invited to the combine. Hunter is considered one of the greatest two-way college athletes since the 1940s. In 2024, he was named first-team cornerback, first-team all-purpose player, and second-team receiver on the Associated Press All-America team.

Hunter has stated his desire to play on both sides of the ball in the NFL. However, his listing as a defensive back suggests that scouts believe that is where he will play professionally.

Last season, Hunter recorded four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and 36 tackles on defense. Offensively, he had 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns receiving, plus one rushing touchdown.

Some analysts believe that Hunter's highest potential lies at cornerback, where his skills, processing speed, and athleticism project him as a potential shutdown corner. Although he could excel as a receiver, his ability to eliminate a top target and create turnovers offers significant value. Others note some weaknesses including a thin frame and overaggressiveness.

Coach’s Corner

30 Missouri 3

Is a nice 3rd and 10+ call when you don’t want to sit in a zone and give an accurate QB time to hit an open window. It provides pressure and big play protection forcing the QB into a decision. I talk more about this and other defensive calls in the All Eyes DB Camp Member’s Area.

DB Tip

Your eyes are a very important part of catching the football.  However,  life as a defensive back is different than that of a WR.  Most of the times a WR will see the ball being thrown by the QB and have the luxury of tracking it from the QB his hands to his.  That’s not the case for DBs.  DBs must be able to track a ball in mid-flight.  Always do ball drills that involve you seeing the ball late to avoid panicking when you are caught in that situation in a game.

DB Fact

Did you know that Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders never allowed a touchdown in man coverage during his entire college career at Florida State? His elite speed, technique, and instincts made him one of the most feared defensive backs in football history. If you want to master man coverage like Prime, it starts with footwork, discipline, and relentless film study!

It’s recruiting season, and if you’re looking to elevate your profile as a high school cornerback, there are certain areas of your game that need to be on point.
