If You Struggle in Zone Coverage...
How to defend your space effectively
The article is at the end of this newsletter
The offseason is where you take stock of who you are as a player. You now have roughly eight months if you are a high school player or coach to sharpen your sword and become a better version of yourself in 2025.
To do this, you must make an accurate assessment of where you stand. This is no time to lie to yourself. Any lies told will result in actions not taken, skills not developed, and plays not made when next season becomes this season.
There’s nothing worse than having the opportunity to load your gun but showing up to the gunfight without enough bullets to win the battle.
How good of a tackler are you? Are you solid in press man coverage? Can you stay with a wide receiver when playing off-man coverage? Do you know where you belong in zone coverage? How good are you at taking on blocks?
As a coach, how strong are you in explaining the concepts your team is running? Can you teach techniques to your players in a way that is simple for them to understand and allows them to play fast?
Come up with honest answers to those questions. Once you have those answers, build out a plan to turn those no’s into yes’s. The offseason moves fast—and it moves even faster when you don’t have a plan. Successful seasons are built right now. So grab your hammer and nails and start building the successful 2025 version of yourself.
There’s no better tool for building a better you than the All Eyes DB Camp Member’s Area. It’s now all-new with a TON of great features designed to rapidly improve your understanding of defensive back play.
DB Tip
Knowing what your responsibility is on the field is critical but if you really want to be a playmaker, then you need to know what everyone else is supposed to be doing on the defense. Knowing everyone’s responsibility keeps you from getting lured into abandoning your own job. Study the whole defense not just your responsibility.
From the Book 101 DB Tips
DB FACT
"On average, defensive backs in the NFL must cover a receiver for 2.5 to 4 seconds per play, but those seconds require peak speed, agility, and technique. Top DBs can cover up to 40 yards in a single play, often reaching speeds of over 20 mph while reacting to the receiver's movements and the ball."
Understanding Zone Coverage: How to Defend Your Space Effectively
Zone coverage is one of the most fundamental concepts in football, especially for defensive backs. Unlike man-to-man coverage, where each defender is responsible for covering a specific player, zone coverage requires defenders to cover designated areas of the field. This approach demands strong communication, situational awareness, and disciplined positioning. Let’s break down the essentials of zone coverage and how defensive backs can excel in this system….. <continue reading>
