How to 'See' the Play Before the Snap
It’s not about your legs, it’s about your brain. Here are 7 surefire ways to boost your IQ and stay ahead of the play
Hey Defender of the Airways,
If there was one "skill" I favored over all others when I was coaching, it was intelligence.
Your brain controls everything else on your body when you’re on the grass. What good is running a 4.4 forty if you don’t know where to go? What good is being strong if you don’t know who to hit? Smart players don't just win their matchups; they raise the level of play for everyone around them.
A smart player is a trusted player. And a trusted player is the one who stays on the field. Here is the blueprint for improving your IQ as a defensive back.
1. Master the Film Room
Regularly watch game film of your own performance and your opponents. Identify route combinations and study the techniques of successful DBs. Pay close attention to formations and receiver splits—they always mean something. Learning tendencies gives you the power of anticipation, which allows you to move faster than your 40-time suggests.
2. Master Your Technique
Intelligence isn't just about reading a playbook; it's about knowing how your body needs to move to counter an opponent. You need to understand your leverage and how to use your help in coverage. If you want a masterclass in the technical side of the game—from eye discipline to foot placement—grab 101 DB Tips—The Ultimate DB Reference Guide. It's the manual for the "physical" IQ every DB needs.
3. Protect the "Queen" (Study Formations)
The number one job of an offense is to protect the passer. Think of the Quarterback as the Queen on a chessboard. For example, an "Empty" set means the ball has to come out fast because there are fewer people protecting the QB. Recognizing these protection clues helps you understand exactly what the offense is forced to do.
4. Pre-Snap Reads & Communication
Effective communication ensures everyone is on the same page. You must understand how you will adjust to what the offense does. What happens if they send a player in motion? What does a tight end shifting across the formation mean for your alignment? Understanding these adjustments makes you a player the coaching staff can trust.
5. Seek Expert Mentorship
You don't have to figure this out by trial and error. Seek guidance from those who have coached and played at the highest levels. This is exactly why I started the All Eyes DB Camp Member’s Area. It was designed to provide the mentorship and film-study insights that players across the globe need to dominate.
6. Stay Updated (Don't Get Baked)
Offenses are constantly cooking up new tweaks, releases, and route combinations to get behind the secondary. If you don't stay informed, prepare to get "fried." Wide receivers and QBs are routinely spying on my Instagram and this blog to see what we’re up to—make sure you’re returning the favor and staying ahead of the trends.
7. Rehearse the Reality (Mental Prep)
Some called it "corny" when Drew Brees would practice a whole drive by himself on an empty field, but there’s nothing corny about a Super Bowl ring. Practice visualization so that when a scenario happens in a game, your body moves automatically into position because you've already rehearsed the play a thousand times in your head.
What Kind of Player Do You Want to Be?
You’ve just been given the blueprint to becoming a high-IQ defensive back. The question is: what are you going to do with it?
If you're ready to stop guessing and start anticipating, I have the resources to get you there. Whether it's the elite mentorship in the Member's Area or the technical "bible" of the position, 101 DB Tips, the tools are right here.
I know what a smart player would do.
