Slant Routes: Three Tips to Beat the Headache
Slant routes can become an absolute headache for defensive backs who are playing press man coverage. After all, the number one thing on our minds in press is the flat ball. With wide receivers knowing that, it can seem as though it’s easy for them to manipulate us up the field and then bend it back in for the slant. If you’re experiencing this problem, here are some quick tips to help you.
âś… Take the Proper Alignment
If you have the freedom to line up with the leverage you want and you suspect that a slant may be coming, it’s best to line up with inside leverage. This forces the receiver to cross your face to get inside. If the defense requires you to line up with outside leverage, consider taking a step first with your inside foot. This makes it easy to continue moving in that direction if the receiver is indeed heading inside on a slant path.
âś… Have Intense Focus
Your eyes should always be focused when playing press man. However, if you are getting beat on slants or you suspect one is coming, ramp up the intensity of your eye focus. Tell yourself to keep your eyes down. Slant routes typically come with a series of moves by the wide receiver off the line of scrimmage. Keeping an intense eye focus will prevent you from getting fooled by these moves before he heads inside on the slant path.
âś… Be Physical and Close Space
It is very difficult to stop slant routes if you’re not going to get your hands on the receiver at the line of scrimmage. If the required technique for you in press is a soft technique, then it’s in your best interest to align inside. Outside of that, make it a point to get your hands on the wide receiver and disrupt his flow. Allowing him space to operate makes it very difficult to beat him to the slant.
As the receiver takes his inside path to the slant, it is ultra important for you to focus on closing the space between you and him. Many defensive backs make the mistake of trying to grab an arm or hips as the receiver is getting separation. Make it your sole focus to close the space by accelerating your body into his. This will make it easier for your off-hand to reach into his hands as the ball is arriving. Thanks for Reading!
I hope this issue gave you valuable insights to improve your defensive back game. Remember, success on the field starts with mastering the fundamentals and staying committed to your craft.
