How do You Defend That?

Stack formations driving you nuts? How Do You Defend That?

Are you tired of seeing offenses line up in stacks with their wide receivers to run away from your aggressive press man coverage? Are tired of seeing them get guys open by using this alignment? I got you.

Most defenses attempt to treat stacks the way they treat close splits and that is with a banjo call. If you are new to football and are not aware of what banjo is, it’s when two defenders align in front of receivers standing close to each other (one outside, the other inside) and each defender takes the first one to come to their side.

Banjo can be effective in close alignments by receivers but less so in stack because it allows the receiver in the rear to hide.

Here’s what you can do instead….

Play “front to back rules”. Here’s how that works:

  1. One defender aligns directly in front of the receiver in front in an aggressive press stance.

  2. The 2nd defender aligns 5 yards behind the press defender shaded slightly inside or outside if the stack is in tight.

  3. The press defender takes the WR in the back man to man regardless of where he releases (in or out)

  4. The defender in the back picks up the receiver in the front no matter where he goes (inside or out)

Why this is effective

First, It forces the front receiver to avoid the front defender even though that Is not who will be covering him. Second, it allows the front defender to be closer to back receiver allowing him to get near him or hands on him sooner. Third, it clearly defines the release of the front receiver making things a little easier for the back defender.

Try this the next time you run into a stack formation if you are a coach and if you are a player, suggest this to your coach the next time you are faced with it.
