How Do You Learn?

Some guys learn by listening. Others learn by watching. Some learn by doing. But there’s another group—the ones with a superpower.

This group pays attention to all three elements. They listen, watch, and do. Mind you, this group is small, but they are great.

As I watched the NFL Combine this past week, there was a strong emphasis on the physical traits a player possesses. Don’t get me wrong—it takes a high level of physical skill to play the game of football. However, physical ability is only part of a player’s success.

What carries even more weight in determining success is a player’s ability to learn and execute.

The best players use all their learning skills to fully comprehend. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen players zone out in meetings, check out during drills when they aren’t involved, and then struggle when it’s time to perform.

Here’s what elite players do:

  • They stay active in meetings by taking notes and asking questions.

  • They keenly observe others during drills to recognize what’s done right and where mistakes are made.

  • They look their coach squarely in the eye when spoken to—listening is an active process, and they stay engaged.

  • They seek clear answers when they don’t understand something. They don’t move forward with uncertainty—they get clarity.

Every great player I have coached has done these things.

One of my favorite sayings is, “Success is not an accident.” It is the direct result of conscious decisions and actions.

What decisions and actions are you going to take to be successful this season? How will you learn?

Nick Emmanwori - South Carolina

Defensive Backs Shine at 2025 NFL Combine

Several defensive backs made waves at the 2025 NFL Combine, showcasing elite athleticism and boosting their draft stock.

Nick Emmanwori (South Carolina) stole the show with an all-time performance. The 6'3", 220-pound safety ran a blazing 4.38-second 40-yard dash, posted a 43-inch vertical jump, and recorded an 11'6" broad jump12. His rare combination of size and athleticism has likely secured him a spot in the first round.

Maxwell Hairston (Kentucky) turned heads with the fastest 40-yard dash among defensive backs at 4.28 seconds. The cornerback also impressed with a 39.5-inch vertical jump and smooth performance in position drills.

Jahdae Barron (Texas) addressed concerns about his size (5'10 3/4") by running a swift 4.39-second 40-yard dash3. His performance likely solidified his status as a top cornerback prospect.

Other standouts included Caleb Ransaw (Tulane), who ranked third among cornerbacks with a 4.33-second 40-yard dash and led in the vertical jump at 40 inches, and Darien Porter (Iowa State), who ran a 4.30 40-yard dash at 6'2 7/8" and 195 pounds.

This year's cornerback group recorded a historic 4.44-second average in the 40-yard dash, making them the fastest CB group at the Combine since 2003

Cover Twomer

Twomer Coverage

Yes, the coverage displayed above was created for 7on7 but it sure works well in 11 on 11 too.

I created this one out of necessity in the middle of a 7-on-7 tournament while coaching for South Florida Express better known now as SFE.

We were facing a team with a D1 quarterback who had beaten us in pool play. The QB was a surgeon, especially when you gave him predictable looks in the secondary like Covers 1,2,3 and 4.

With him being very adept at reading coverage and finding the holes in zones + matchups in man, I decided to muddy up his looks.

In Twomer - the strong side is playing Man Under and the weakside is playing a conditional Cover 2.

On the man side we get the safety of a safety over the top. ON the zone side we get the trade off of routes in a zone with the potential to turn into match-up man.

The hot shot quarterback kept reading the man side thinking it was across the board and fell victim to a pair of throws to the flat on the weakside right into the arms of the corner who was waiting.

In addition, he became hesitant when thought the weakside was zone but because of the route concepts, turned into man with help over the top. This resulted in time clock sacks that led to points.

This is just one of many defenses that I have in my Ultimate 7-on-7 Defensive Playbook. Don’t get hung up on the title - all the defenses in the book work great in the Fall too. If you coach, you should have a copy.

DB Tip

Blind ball drills are a must.  For DBs doing regular ball drills where you see the QB throwing the ball does not help you much.  The life of a DB,  especially a cornerback,  revolves around seeing the ball when it is already in flight.  You must train yourself to get comfortable turning your head and adjusting to a ball that is already in the air.  Doing so allows you to make better plays on the ball and also gives you enough confidence to drive to the WR out of breaks knowing that you have the skill to turn your head late and comfortably make a play on a ball already in flight.  Your ball drills in practice should involve you doing just that.

DB Fact

"NFL cornerbacks typically react to a play in less than 1.5 seconds. The ability to read a receiver’s movements, recognize route combinations, and break on the ball quickly separates elite DBs from the rest. That’s why film study and football IQ are just as important as speed and athleticism!"

Control Your Body Language

Ever felt like a coach had it out for you?  In your mind,  you don’t cause any problems,  you do everything you you’re supposed to do and you don’t suck,  so why are you not playing?  It could be this funny little big thing known as body language.

Talk to a player about his body language and it will quite often fall on deaf ears.  It’s simply not something that guys focus on but boy are you going to wish you did pay attention once things start going downhill.  When you are a player there are some things that just don’t enter your mind.  I used to be there.  I got older
