Defend That: Bunch Set Point Man

How do we stop the offense from killing us with.....

Bunch sets have become a common set in spread offenses as the opposition looks to get dynamic players away from press coverage and out into open space.

The answer for many players and coaches is to try and run some kind of box coverage over the bunch or try to play press on at least one of the 3 players in the bunch set. My talk on defending this will focus on man coverage.

Simply put, the best way to play man vs bunch is press the point man and play banjo vs. the two remaining off the ball players.

Let’s focus on the point man. As a former OC, I am here to tell you that the point man sets everything in this formation. If you can disrupt him, you have a really good chance of ruining the pass concept.

Most players when trying to be aggressive vs the point man will do so with an outside shade because Cover 1 is the normal man coverage being run and that provides help to the middle of the field.

My plea to you is to get aggressive on the point with an inside shade. Here’s why:

  1. The outside receiver is most likely to be releasing up the field or pausing to go underneath. This sets a border on the outside of the point man.

  2. When you align inside you put the point man in a “phone booth”. He’s restricted by the outside receiver and you resist him to the inside.

  3. Allowing him to go inside right away gives free releases to the two off the ball men in the bunch set.

Furthermore, I recommend a quick jam from inside out on the point man since he’s in restricted space. He is limited in his ability to get away from this technique. Delaying or widening his release will affect at least one, if not both, routes from the other two receivers.

Try this technique and watch how the opponent stops running the formation.

Play Defense is a lifestyle

Instead of begging the QB to throw you the ball as a wide receiver, come play some defense and steal it from him.

When you are in a fight, whether literally or figuratively, don’t forget to play some defense. Defense leads to offense

When you are on the gridiron playing ball, don’t just be out there, go make plays. Sprint to the ball, make a hard tackle, force a fumble, catch a tipped ball, break up a pass, intercept a football and instead of running out of bounds go score.
