DB News: Technique Clip, What is MOD, Why Aren't You Great Yet?
Welcome, reader!
What Stops Most Defensive Backs from Being Great?
It’s hard to boil it down to just one thing. One of the keys to being great at anything is consistency, and for most players, it starts there. Many DBs fall short of their potential because they haven’t developed consistent habits. They don’t consistently practice technique, they don’t consistently study—and that leads to inconsistent performance. It’s crucial for defensive backs to set routines and have the discipline to stick to them.
The other big factor is confidence. It’s tough not to let results dictate your mood, but you have to be almost obsessive about this. Always keep a high opinion of yourself—not arrogance, but a steady belief that you are good and that when a play needs to be made, you will make it. Much of that confidence comes from preparation—and preparation comes from consistency.
Bottom line: consistency is the key.

Quick Poll
In what area as a defensive back do you struggle the most? |
What Is It? “MOD”
MOD stands for Man On Deep (often said “Man On Demand”). It’s a pattern-match rule used in Quarters/Match coverages:
Rule: You play man on your receiver if he goes vertical (threatens deep). If he goes under/inside/out quick, you zone off and help elsewhere.
Who uses it: Commonly the corner on #1 and the safety on #2 in 2×2 sets.
Why it’s useful: It gives you man coverage on verticals without wasting defenders on short routes, so you can overlap crossers, rob seams, and close windows.
