This Is What Kills DBs

This year marked a decade of me training defensive backs. This came after another decade of coaching on both sides of the football, but mostly the secondary and coordinating defenses.

My experience in coaching has taken me from youth football (six-year-olds) all the way up to training many of the standout defensive backs you watch on Sundays in the NFL. That’s a lot of teaching, coaching, and training.

The prevailing thing that I have noticed in defensive backs who are struggling, not meeting their goals, or having a hard time making plays is a lack of knowledge. Many players, even professionals, simply don’t know what to do.

Football, even from its early stages, is offense-focused. A lot of energy gets poured into quarterbacks and running backs in little league. As you progress through high school and into college, the passing game gets most of the attention. In most cases, defense is an afterthought. “Go play DB and don’t get beat” is the basic mindset.

Most high schools lack a quality defensive back coach or any DB coach at all. Many defensive backs think they can wing it just by using their physical gifts (height, speed, etc.). And they are right, until they are not. At some point, a defensive back’s lack of knowledge gets the door slammed in his face, and either his career ends or takes a steep turn in the wrong direction.

When it comes to excelling at defensive back, trust me when I tell you: Knowledge is the key. Knowledge of technique, scheme, offensive attacks, and more puts you over the edge. When you acquire it, coaches, recruiters, scouts, and general managers notice it. Guess what, your bank account will notice it too.

Ask Chad

What is Match Coverage?

Answer:

Match coverage is the blend between zone and man that most serious defenses live in now.

Instead of:

  • dropping to a spot like old-school zone, or

  • locking in pure man on a receiver no matter what,

Defenders use zone eyes at the snap, then “match” routes as they declare.

Simple way to think of it:

  1. Start in a zone look (eyes on QB, seeing routes develop).

  2. Use rules like MOD, MEG, Poach, Banjo, etc. to decide:

    • If he goes vertical → I carry him like man.

    • If he goes under/out → I pass him and zone off/help elsewhere.

  3. Everyone is tied together so the coverage adjusts to the routes, not just the formation.

In Simple Terms:
Match coverage = pattern-based coverage. Your DB isn’t just “covering grass” or chasing a guy blindly—he’s reading routes and matching based on clear rules.
