All Eyes DB Camp: Technique that Shows Up

Welcome, reader!

Technique that Shows Up

In the heat of battle, technique is your savior. You may already know this, but the trick is knowing how to get your mind there in that moment.

When the moment is big, there’s the distraction of thought—the battle in your head that rages on. This isn’t just any other snap. This play could be the play of the game. What if they come my way and I don’t make the play? What will people think about me?

The best way to avoid this mental pitfall is to be so sound in your technique that you have no choice but to do it right. No matter how big the moment, your technique is your technique. That level of discipline is achieved through repetition. It’s why I created the motto “Consistency breeds results.”

My journey through playing, coaching, and training defensive backs has proven that motto right time and again. Fortune favors the prepared. The player who is obsessive about his technique is the one who can call upon it, over and over, in any moment—without fail.

How good is your technique? How much do you practice it? Do you work it pre-practice? Do you hit it post-practice? Or are you the guy who waits until the coach tells you to do it during practice?

If you want technique that shows up when the bullets are flying, it’s going to take reps. Get to work.

What Is It?: Bracket Coverage

Bracket is a double-team concept where two defenders divide a receiver with leverage (in/out or high/low) so he never has a clean throwing lane.

How it works (simple):

  • In/Out Bracket: One defender plays inside leverage, the other plays outside leverage at similar depth. Anything breaking in = inside defender; out-breaking = outside defender.

  • High/Low Bracket: One defender stays on top (deep, top-down), the other plays underneath (short/intermediate). Vertical = top player; stop/curl/dig = low player.

Who & when:

  • Used on a problem WR (X/slot) or key third-down/red-zone target.

  • Common pairs: Corner + Safety, Nickel + Safety, or LB + Safety on a TE.

Keys to play it well:

  • Declare leverage pre-snap (e.g., “I’m IN / you OUT” or “HIGH / LOW”).

  • Spacing: Stay patient—don’t collapse the bracket and create a pick route for yourself.

  • Eyes: Inside/out player keys the hips; top player keeps top-down vision to the QB.

  • Pass-offs: If #2/#3 threatens your zone, communicate and keep the bracket on the priority target.

Common mistakes:

  • Both defenders taking the same leverage (double-inside or double-high) → free access.

  • Top defender peeking low and getting stacked; low defender bailing too early and giving up the stick.
