All Eyes DB Camp News: Your Technique, Slot D, Why Off Man

Welcome, reader!

The Technician Wins

There’s a right way and a wrong way to do everything. We’ve all heard that—and for good reason. From the simplest task, like tying your shoes, to something intricate, like stitching the inseam on a pair of jeans, technique determines the quality of the work. Are you a technician?

Your success as a defensive back starts with knowing the proper techniques and continues with the discipline to practice them again and again. Success isn’t an accident. We often marvel at elite athleticism but forget that the most successful players thrive on execution.

Analyze your techniques. Are they where they need to be? Do you have the knowledge? Are you disciplined in practicing them? If you want to become the elite DB you strive to be, learn the techniques—then practice them with undying passion.

The difference between a good defensive back and an elite one isn't just speed—it's precision, organized knowledge, and Football IQ.

For over a decade, the core techniques used by Pro Bowl defensive backs and top college stars have been a closely guarded secret. Now, the proven system that sharpens their skills is available to you in one place: 101 DB Tips.

This is not a general coaching guide. It's a precise blueprint that breaks down every essential technique, from the stance to the finish, into 101 actionable lessons.

Here’s what makes 101 DB Tips the ultimate resource:

  • 101 Proven Techniques: Sharpen your backpedal, hip flip, punch, and breaks using the exact methods I teach the Pros.

  • Precision & Clarity: Every tip is organized for instant implementation, saving you time on the field and in the film room.

  • Immediate Results: Use these cues in your very next drill to eliminate wasted steps and force turnovers.

Don't just take my word for it. Here is what one coach had to say:

“Simple explanations placed in an organized manner. Every book on football should be made like this.”

What Is It?: Apex Player

The apex player is the overhang defender aligned between #2 and the EMOLS (slot and the tackle/TE), usually ~5–6 yards off. Often the nickel or an overhang LB/S.

  • Alignment: midpoint between #2 and the box; leverage in/out based on the call.

  • Run: force/spill the perimeter; set the edge.

  • Pass: handle #2—carry vertical in match/quarters, curl-flat in Cover 3, hook/curl in Cover 2.

  • Keys: eyes QB→#2, patient weave to hold leverage, communicate Banjo/Box vs stacks.

  • Goal: control quick game and perimeter runs without giving free access.

FYI: My book 101 DB Tips (softcover version) has a glossary of 100 passing terms you need to know…. Success begins with knowledge.

Ask Chad

Q: What are the advantages to off man coverage?

Chad’s answer:

I see 3 major advantages to playing off man coverage

  1. Disguises the coverage. (Is it Cover 1 or Cover 3?)

  2. Gives the defender another tool to use vs the wide receiver

  3. Limits the deep routes in the passing tree
