All Eyes DB Camp News: Preparation, Tight Splits, Reference Guide and More

Welcome, reader!

Preparation Wins Games

Preparation is the key. Generals prepare for war. CEOs prepare for meetings. Ministers prepare for sermons. Why? Because it matters. Failure isn’t an option—but it becomes a real possibility when preparation isn’t part of the process.

You can’t step on the field on game day and wing it. Athletic ability only takes you so far. Reactionary players arrive late to the party. Anticipatory players beat blocks, step in front of receivers, and take the ball away.

If you’re not getting the results you want, start with your prep:

  • Are you doing enough?

  • Are you doing the right things?

  • Do you have a consistent routine?

Preparation starts with knowledge—what to do, how to do it, and who you’re facing. Study the technique, the scheme, and the opponent. Put time into these, and watch your performance take off.

Reader feedback:

The 101 DB Tips DrillBook is outstanding. My son has been using it for about 3–4 years, and it’s been instrumental in his development. The progression of drills is clear, practical, and easy to apply at every stage. What really sets it apart is the support behind it — the author not only provides great content but also takes the time to answer specific questions through email and on his channel. This book isn’t just a resource; it’s a long-term guide that continues to deliver value. I highly recommend it to any player, parent, or coach serious about developing defensive backs the right way.

What Is It?: Cover 2 Invert (a.k.a. “2 Invert”)

What it is: A rotation where corners take the deep halves and safeties roll down into the flats—essentially inverting traditional Cover 2 responsibilities.

Why use it:

  • Disguises coverage pre-snap (looks like single-high or quarters).

  • Traps quick game to the flat.

  • Protects against seam shots with late rotation.

Player notes:

  • Corners (deep half): open with depth, midpoint vertical threats, stay top-down.

  • Safeties (flat): roll down with eyes inside; cap the quick out/slant; tackle clean.

  • Nickel/Apex: communicate the rotation; don’t vacate hook-curl too early.
