AEDB News: Technique = INTs

Your Defensive Back Chatter

The 2025 season is here. You’ve been dreaming about it, and now it’s a reality. The question is: are you prepared? We know that preparation is the key.

All of the running and lifting is in the bank. While both will continue during the season, the biggest part of your growth now that games have started will come from improving your technique and advancing your knowledge.

When you line up on game day in a pressure moment with the crowd roaring, it’s your knowledge and technique that will silence the noise, allow you to focus, and put you in position to make a play.

Your knowledge is your helmet, and your technique is your weapon, soldier. How sharp are those tools? Just know — they can always get better.

Speaking of technique, check out one of my pupils below making an interception in the preseason using a skill we worked on during the offseason.

🏈 DB Spotlight: Ja’Quan McMillan’s Preseason Interception

In the preseason, Broncos DB Ja’Quan McMillan put on a clinic with his interception. What stood out was the smooth execution of the pedal, shuffle, crossover, break technique — exactly how you want to see it done. He kept his eyes disciplined, transitioned cleanly, and broke with confidence to make the play. It’s a great reminder of how technique creates opportunities.

⚡ Quick DB Tip: Avoiding False Steps

One of the fastest ways to lose at the line of scrimmage is the false step. Many DBs rock back or pick up their front foot before moving, which kills their cushion. The fix? Keep your weight on the balls of your feet and drive off clean. A good stance eliminates wasted motion.

🎥 Coming Tuesday: Cover 1 Explained in 5 Minutes

On Tuesday, August 26th, my new YouTube video goes live:
“Cover 1 Explained in 5 Minutes.”

Cover 1 comes in many variations, and I’ll break each one down in a quick, easy-to-understand fashion so you can master one of the most common coverages in football. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it. Click here to subscribe to my YouTube Channel

📘 Why You Need 101 DB Tips

I know some players and coaches hesitate because of the cost. The softcover is $99.95 and the e-book is $69.95. But let’s put that in perspective: a trainer will cost you much more. Earning a scholarship is worth thousands of dollars. Landing an NIL deal is worth tens of thousands. For coaches, having your DB unit lead the state in interceptions, or winning a state championship, carries immense value.

This book is an investment in your game and your future. And if you’re really in a crunch for funds, you can use Shop Pay to split up the payments — but you need the book now. The season is here. Don’t wait until it’s too late to get better.
