AEDB News: DBs: Build Your 2025 Mentality + Quick Tip Inside

Your Defensive Back Chatter

Hey Defender of the Airways,

Your 2025 season will be made up of many battles. The question is — are you built for it?

Yes, you put in the work in the weight room and on the field this offseason (at least I hope you did). But did you prepare yourself mentally?

If you’re going to win in 2025, you’ll need a true DB mentality. Good defensive backs react well. Great defensive backs anticipate. Do you know where the ball is going to be? That’s the difference-maker.

If you find yourself constantly surprised by what’s happening on the field, you have more work to do in the film room. A big part of your game must involve knowing what’s going to happen before it happens. That’s where big plays — and interceptions — come from.

Double down on your film study this week. Uncover tendencies, notice patterns, and take advantage of them. Knowledge is power, and it leads to I-N-T-S.

🏈 DB Spotlight

Offenses are always looking for mismatches — and when they find them, they won’t hesitate to exploit them. As a coach, you must close those mismatches the moment you recognize them (hopefully before the game even starts).

One of the biggest mismatches I saw in Week 1 of the high school season looked like this:

Our job as coaches is to eliminate open holes in the defense and turn them into wins for our unit. Inside the All Eyes DB Camp Member’s Area, I break down how to close this specific mismatch using Moon Clue coverage — flipping an offensive advantage into a nightmare for them.

⚡ Quick DB Tip: Avoid the Bad Angle

Ever feel like you get a strong jam in press, but the WR still beats you deep?

That’s often because of bad angles — most young DBs don’t know when to release the jam. Hold on too long and you’ll end up trailing underneath on the fade.

Here’s what to do:
✅ Strike with 2 hands if the receiver is directly in front of you
✅ Use your off hand if he’s slightly outside your frame
✅ Remove your hands if he’s completely outside your frame
✅ Get vertical if he releases outside (go straight up the field)
✅ Don’t chase his hip right away after he clears outside

Follow these rules and you’ll keep from getting stacked and burned.

Speaking of DB mentality…

Anticipation is just part of it. The bigger part is how you think on the field.

In my latest YouTube video, I break down the 3 things elite DBs always have in their mentality. This is a must-watch for players and coaches who want to elevate their game.
