5 Essentials for Mastering Open-Field Tackling
Hey Defender of the Airways,
When you think of cornerback or safety, the prevailing thought is about covering but one of the most important jobs we do in the secondary is saving the defense when a runner gets loose in the open field.
I have never witnessed a defense that can call themselves good that didn’t tackle well, especially in the open field. So if this is an essential skill for the position, it is in your best interest to lend it some quality time to practicing it.
With that in mind, here are 5 HIGH KEY tips for tackling well in the open field:
✅ Approach with Control
In the open field, you must come to balance well before contact. Use short, choppy "shimmy" steps to reduce momentum and maintain full control of your direction. You can't tackle what you can't track.
✅ Maintain Your Leverage
Never overrun or cross your leverage. Keep the ball carrier on your inside hip and funnel him toward your pursuit or the sideline. Know where your help is and use it!
✅ Break Down with a Wide Base
As you approach the tackle point, drop your hips, widen your feet outside your shoulders, and keep your chest up. This wide, athletic base allows you to react laterally to any last-second cut the ball carrier makes.
✅ Track the Near Hip
Don't get fooled by head fakes or quick feet. Lock in on the ball carrier's near hip—the hip doesn't lie; it tells you exactly where his center of gravity is moving.
✅ Shoot Low and Finish the Play
Aim for the thighs or waist. Keep your head up (never duck) as you shoot, wrap the legs tight, and drive your feet through contact. Coaches: use Alley or Angle Drills to reinforce these principles!
