3 Ways to Unlock Elite Speed This Offseason
Hey Defender of the Airways,
It’s the offseason, and your focus is likely on one thing: getting faster. Whether you're trying to earn a starting spot or climb onto the radar of college coaches, speed is the ultimate currency.
Everybody wants to be fast, but most people train for it the wrong way. Here are three proven ways to actually move the needle before summer camp.
1. Get Stronger: Force Equals Speed
Speed and strength go hand in hand. You don’t have to be bulky, but you must be powerful. Sprinting is the act of generating force into the ground. If you aren't strong, you can't produce that force.
The Big Three: Squats (power), Cleans (explosion), and Bench (arm drive).
The "Engine": Never neglect your hamstrings. Along with your calves and hip flexors, these are the muscles that actually propel you forward.
2. Get Knowledgeable: Stop Thinking, Start Reacting
This is the one most guys miss. You can have 4.3 speed, but if you don’t know where to go, you’ll play like you run a 4.6. When your brain is stuck processing information, your muscles literally slow down. This is why I built the All Eyes DB Camp Member's Area—to give you the Football IQ that allows your athleticism to take over. When you understand route combinations and coverage responsibilities, you stop "thinking" and start flying.
The more you know, the faster you play.
3. Get on the Track
There is no better way to improve your speed than competing in sprint events. Join the track team, put your ego aside, and compete.
The Goal: If you start the season running an 11.8 in the 100m and end at 11.4, you just became a faster football player.
Sprinting vs. Conditioning: If you’re training on your own, remember that speed work requires full recovery. A good rule of thumb is 1 minute of rest for every 10 yards sprinted. If you’re huffing and puffing between reps, you’re training endurance, not speed.
The Bottom Line: Don't let your hard work on the track go to waste because your brain can't keep up on the field. Combine your physical training with elite mental preparation.
