3 Ways to Sharpen Your Range as a Safety

If you are a safety who finds yourself coming up short when trying to reach balls thrown into the deep areas of the field, or if you simply want to improve the amount of ground you cover so you can make more plays, here are three great tips to enhance your range.

1. Improve Your Pedal

Most safeties do not have an adequate backpedal. Typically, they are too high and take steps that are too long. This usually results in a slow pedal and allows routes to get on top of you when you have a deep part of the field responsibility. Improving the mechanics of your pedal will allow you to stay square longer and give you the ability to reach all parts of the field with equal efficiency.

Action Checkpoint: Focus on low pad level and taking quick, short steps.

2. Work on Your Hip Flips

Eventually, you will have to transition out of your pedal, and when you do, you must open up at 45, 90, and 180-degree angles to reach a receiver or a thrown ball. Many times, you will have to switch quickly from one direction to another. The more efficiently you can execute that switch, the more ground you will cover. Quarterbacks will try to fool you with their eyes and pump fakes. When you can quickly flip your hips to counter their moves, you can get to the throws they think they can complete.

Action Checkpoint: Practice hip rotation drills (climb ladder drill, 45 opens) to smoothly open and transition.

3. Catch More Deep Passes

This may seem odd, but follow along. The more deep passes you catch in practice and training, the more comfortable you will get. Believe it or not, your confidence makes you move faster. Think about it: would you run full speed in a dark hallway? Get more comfortable judging the flight of and catching passes to the deep areas of the field. This will make you more confident about your ability to make a play on them and thus allow you to run faster when those throws are made.

Action Checkpoint: Integrate focused drills that track and high-point over-the-shoulder passes.

Get to work on these three areas, and watch how rapidly you improve your range, get to more passes, and start making more plays. Thanks for Reading!
I hope this issue gave you valuable insights to improve your defensive back game. Remember, success on the field starts with mastering the fundamentals and staying committed to your craft.
