šŸˆ 3 Ways to Improve Your Playmaking as a DB

Every defensive back wants to be a playmaker. It’s no fun running around the field and not touching the football. If you want to find yourself in and around the action more often, there are some specific steps you are going to have to take. I have outlined those steps for you down below:

āœ… Study Film

Your success in anything boils down to your preparation, and when we are talking about football, that means studying film. Playmakers have the ability to anticipate, and that comes from knowing what the offense likes to do and when they like to do it. The only way to get that knowledge is by studying film religiously. Know the offense better than they know themselves.

āœ… Ace the Playbook

Average players know their assignment. Playmakers know everyone’s assignment. Do you think your coach, if he was in your body, could make a ton of plays? The answer is probably yes, and why would that be the answer? Because he totally understands the defense. When you know everyone’s assignment, you don’t get tricked. You end up being where you are supposed to be consistently, and that’s how you make plays. When you are out of position, the offense wins. When you are in position, you and your team win. Ace your understanding of the playbook.

āœ… Believe What You See

Now that you have all the knowledge, don’t second-guess it. When the offense shows you the play that you know is coming, believe it. Don’t play mind games with yourself and think it’s a trick. Believe what you see, and now let all the physical work you have been doing take over. That’s why you lifted all those weights and did all that running. Now that you've upped your football IQ, put it all together when your eye reads the play. See it, believe it, and GO!

Follow these three important steps outlined above, then watch how you and the pigskin become very close friends. All of the elite playmakers I have coached and trained do these things. It will certainly work for you too.
