Now, here’s your DB Tip:
Camps are coming, and you don’t want to show up, get asked to play off-man, and get completely exposed. If you're a coach looking to implement off-man coverage this season and want your players to excel at it, keep the following key points in mind:
✅ Align Properly
Many DBs line up head-up on the receiver or don’t shade inside enough. Get at least a full man (preferably two) inside to force the receiver to reveal his intentions as he comes off the ball. If he’s running an inside route, you’ll recognize it immediately.
✅ Keep Your Eyes Down
Just like in press coverage, your eyes play a crucial role. Focus on the receiver’s hips—nothing else. Don’t let your eyes drift up to his shoulders, head, or eyes—receivers use those to deceive you. The hips don’t lie.
✅ Use Your Pedal + Weave
The key to winning in off-man is maintaining both inside/outside leverage and staying on top of the route. A controlled pedal keeps you over the top, while a disciplined weave helps you stay square as the receiver tries to stem inside or outside. Opening up too early allows him to attack your leverage and blind spot.
Master these three elements to improve your off-man reps, stand out at camp, and dominate real games with off-man coverage that disguises itself as zone pre-snap.
P.S. Don’t forget about Acorns—start investing and grab a FREE book. What a combo!
Best,
Coach Wilson
