Now, here’s your DB Tip:

If you are ever tasked with covering a wide receiver that is significantly faster than you, here are 3 ways to neutralize him:

✅ Double Down on Your Technique
This is no time to play scared. Opening the gate, playing too far off and other poor habits can not be a part of your plan. Focus hard on your technique and it’s execution. Technique neutralizes speed. Widen his releases, get clean breaks and focus your eyes to win.

✅ Study His Film
The best way to beat a faster guy to the ball is to know where the ball is going to be. If film is available, study the hell out of it. Know the WR better than he knows himself. What do his splits mean? What does he run in certain formations? Does his foot position mean anything? Get all the clues you can in film study. If you are in a camp without the benefit of film, watch all his reps when you aren’t facing him.

✅ Know Where Your Help Is
Believe it or not, there’s always help in man coverage. In Cover 1, help is in the middle of the field. In Cover 0, your help is in the pass rush (the ball has to come out quicker). Most of the times, the WR’s alignment provides you with help. Understand where your help is and play accordingly. Smart DB’s use their help to win.

Use these 3 tips next time you are meeting a speedster and cool off his jets!

P.S. Don’t forget about Acorns—start investing and grab a FREE book. What a combo!

Best,
Coach Wilson
