3 Tips for Improving Your Coverage at Safety
As a safety, your primary jobs are covering deep and fitting the run—either as force or the last line of defense. More and more, you’re also asked to play man (or match in Quarters/3-Match). That wide-open space vs. a shifty, fast WR can be intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. Use these three tips:
✅ Develop your pedal
Speed it up with smaller, quicker steps so a foot is always ready to plant and change direction. Keep your weight over your toes and maintain a lower pad level—don’t get tall just to see the QB from the hash or post.
✅ Learn to weave
WRs will stem you to make you open early. Stay in your pedal and weave to mirror the stem without turning your back. You’ll hold leverage, stay patient, and avoid donating space.
✅ Stay square
Square hips are the essence of coverage—press, catch, or pedal. Staying square lets you break in any direction efficiently. Commit to the first two tips to help you stay square, and avoid opening too early or giving the receiver access to your blind spot.
